Explore over fifty ideas worth celebrating at the University of Victoria’s 3rd annual IdeaFest.

Are you a computer nerd, music lover or crusader for social justice? This year’s festival shines a spotlight on the diverse research, creativity and passion for knowledge found in every corner of campus, with topics ranging from renewable energy technology and global peace-making to innovations in music composition and human health.

New and emerging research will be explained, debated, re-worked and brought to life in a wide range of panels, workshops, exhibits, lectures, performances, screenings and tours.

February 2014 Update

Indigenous master's degree a Canadian first


A new University of Victoria program is the first in Canada to offer a master’s degree in Indigenous Communities Counselling leading to provincial and national certification.

“The program will directly address the urgent need for professional counsellors who are able to provide culturally relevant counselling services to Indigenous individuals, families and communities,” says Anne Marshall, an education professor who co-chaired the initial advisory committee that led to the program, along with professor emerita Dr. Lorna Williams. Adasla: The Movement of Hands

The World's Biggest Button Blanket is on display at the Legacy Gallery Downtown. It was created over the fall 2013 academic term, in collaboration with students at UVic's First Peoples House. The blanket invites new conversations about indigenous button blanket makers and the artistic traditions that surround them. It is a project of the Williams Legacy Chair in Modern and Contemporary Art of the Pacific Northwest.

When: January 16 to April 25.  Open Wednesday – Saturday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Where: UVic’s Legacy Gallery Downtown.  630 Yates Street. Free admission.

 

Global conference on community engagement

The University of Victoria will welcome more than 300 delegates from around the world to Victoria on May 20-22 to discover and highlight the innovative experiences of universities and communities working in partnership. For more information see http://www.uvic.ca/cuvic2014/

 
Gold for UVic in international sustainability rating system

UVic has achieved a gold rating in the Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment & Rating System that colleges and universities use to measure their sustainability progress. The major reporting categories are academics, engagement, operations and planning and administration. The report reflects the progress UVic has made in a wide range of sustainability categories and also identifies areas where we can improve in the future, which will be helpful as part of the upcoming process to renew the Sustainability Action Plan. An Evening with Cheap Trick

CHEAP TRICK may be one of the most covered bands of all time. Their timeless classics include "I Want You to Want Me," "Surrender," and "The Flame. With more than 5,000 performances, 20 million records sold, 29 movie soundtracks and 40 gold and platinum recording awards, the band was honored in October 2007 by the Chicago Chapter of NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences) for their contributions to the music industry.
