FORUM EXAMINES IMPACT OF DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGE IN THE CAPITAL REGION: The University of Victoria and the Capital Regional District (CRD) are hosting a special two-day event. “A New Leaf: Turning to our Region’s Future” will re-ignite the region’s sustainability strategy by exploring the effects of changing demographics on how the region can shape its future. This UVic 50th anniversary event kicks off with a free public lecture on the evening of Feb. 21 followed by a full-day discussion forum on Feb. 22, where attendance is by registration.
“As we move from a Regional Growth Strategy to a Sustainability Strategy, this event will contribute to a better understanding of how demographic trends will impact the economy, climate action and community health,” says Robert Lapham, CAO of the CRD.
The free public lecture “Creating a Welcoming, Diverse and Sustainable Community”will be delivered by Dr. Caroline Andrew, Director of the Centre on Governance at the University of Ottawa and a nationally recognized expert on urban planning. Her presentation will highlight how people define and achieve goals for their communities. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. in UVic’s David Lam Auditorium (MacLaurin Building A144).
At the Feb. 22 forum, Dr. Andrew will be joined by Dr. Aleck Ostry, Canada Research Chair specializing in the social determinants of healthy communities, and Rob Barrs, principal, Golder Sustainable Communities Group, who is the lead consultant on the Regional Sustainability Strategy. In a panel-style plenary, these experts will square off under the guidance of moderator Rob Abbott, Executive Director, Carbon Neutral Government and Climate Action Outreach, Ministry of the Environment, to discuss the effects of regional demographic trends, with an eye to tools and tactics for creating future healthy and vibrant communities. Forum participants will discuss the topics in more detail at facilitated breakout sessions.
“The university is pleased to have partnered with a number of municipal representatives in organizing and facilitating this discussion forum,” says Michael Miller, UVic Associate Vice-President of Research. “As we celebrate our 50th anniversary we look forward to active collaboration with the community for many years to come.”
No registration is required for the public lecture. Visit www.uvic.ca/newleaf for further information and to register for the discussion forum.
