Song of the Earth

In 1907, the late-Romantic Austrian composer Gustav Mahler lost his daughter to scarlet fever, was diagnosed with a dangerous heart condition, and gave up his longstanding directorship of the Vienna Court Opera. The following year, Mahler composed Das Lied von der Erde (Song of the Earth), considered by many to be his most significant work.

On Jan. 11, UVic’s School of Music will conclude a special Week with Gustav Mahler with a performance of this profound work.  While the concert is the main event, the week will include open rehearsals, lectures by UVic’s Dániel Péter Biró and Harald Krebs, an orchestral reading of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, special master classes, and a Listening Room featuring broadcasts from the Berlin Philharmonic’s Digital Concert Hall archive of performances of some of Mahler’s work. All events are open to the public. For a complete schedule of A Week with Mahler, visit: http://finearts.uvic.ca/music/events/2014/mahler/

Black holes: more than meets the eye

Of all the legacies of Einsteinʼs general theory of relativity, none is more fascinating than black holes. Astronomers have come to believe that black holes with masses a million to a billion times the mass of the sun lurk at the centres of galaxies. These black holes might play a much more important role in the evolution of galaxies than anyone has anticipated.

All this and more will be discussed at the Café Scientifique on Jan.14 when the guest speaker is Dr. Laura Ferrarese from NRC’s Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics, and an adjunct in UVic’s Department of Physics and Astronomy.

What: Cafe Scientifique—"Black Holes: More than Meets the Eye"

Stars in planetary search converge

The biggest stars in the search for new planets are coming to Victoria.

With hundreds of extra-solar planets discovered in recent decades, attention is turning anew to how such planets form and evolve around their host stars, as well as whether any of the planets are habitable.

That topic is the subject of discussion at a June 4 keynote public talk by Debra Fisher, a Yale University astronomy professor who has discovered hundreds of exoplanets, including the first-known multiple-planet system in 1999. Fisher will address why we search for habitable planets similar to Earth—because we are interested in finding life elsewhere.

The talk is part of the June 2-7 International Astronomical Union symposium, co-sponsored by the University of Victoria with the University of Toronto, which is bringing together 250 of the brightest minds probing planetary evolution.
